ONLINE LEGAL RESEARCH

ONLINE LEGAL RESEARCH
WESTLAW & LEXIS are available to students who are in the second semester of their first year or farther along. Passwords can be obtained after a training session with a Westlaw representative. Please ask at the reserve desk for more information.

  • Westlaw  – Requires training and password.
  • Lexis – Requires training and password.

LEGAL SEARCH/PORTALS

  • Findlaw – Access to comprehensive practice, state, federal and international materials (codes, caselaw, forms, directories,  services and more).
  • LawGuru – Members answer questions submitted by searchers. Pay for faster service and for forms.
  • Jurist – U. of Pittsburgh legal news service. Provides news, commentary, docs, videos and more.
  • Cornell LII – Go to for primary federal, state, and international law, including statutes, codes, rules, resources, bulletins, treaties, encyclopedias, and information on popular topics. Provided by the Legal Information Institute.
  • Internet Legal Research Group– Indexes to national statutes, law reviews, legal practice areas, legal forms and more.  Provides law school course outlines and free legal forms. 
  • Hieros Gamos – Information on U.S. and international governments, including executive, legislative, and judicial materials, plus a marketplace to find experts, law firms, employment, online legal publications, and legal associations.
  • Meta-Index of U.S. Legal Resources – Runs searches through  legal indexes court opinions by jurisdiction.
  • Attorney directory from Martindale – Find lawyers, firms, and jobs.

QUICK FACT LOOKUP

  • itools – Provides search, language translations, currency conversions, maps, networking & web tools.
  • HotSheet – Volunteers edit topics on the web they know something about.  Many categories . Can search within search results. Search in many languages.
  • Dictionaries on the Web– Links organized alphabetically by language.

SEARCH PORTALS 

MASS. RESOURCES

  • Mass. Reports – Decisions of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and Appeals Court since 2001. Includes  advance sheets and slip opinions.
  • Mass. Court System  - Links to courts.
  • Mass. Lawyers Weekly – Weekly  newspaper includes notice of court opinions federal and state plus administrative rules, covers unpublished decisions and articles on the practice of law. 
  • Commonwealth of Mass.–  Links to the executive departments, legislature and judiciary, local and federal government.
  • Mass. State Law Library – Search online catalog from 1970 on,  state documents online, may need password or library card for some database options.
  • Mass. Trial Court Law Library  – Portal to general laws, Code of Mass Regulations, court rules, fees, executive orders, Mass. courts, state agency opinions, municipal bylaws. Access Hein Online, Nolo Law Books, Retrieve Law with a library card .
  • Mass. Gen. Laws – General laws plus session laws. 
  • Code of Mass. Regs.– Trial Court Law Library access to all regulations published on the web.

META SEARCH ENGINES 

  • Dogpile  – Searches Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask.  Includes news, images, yellow and white pages.
  • MetaCrawler - Searches Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask.

LISTS AND NEWSGROUPS

  • Google Groups – Provides lists of discussion groups.
  • TileNet – Provides a reference guide to email, newsletters, and discussion lists by name, description, and domain.

GENERAL SUBJECT CATALOG

Yahoo!  –  Portal to various popular areas of interest; e.g. movies, people search sports.

  • WWW Virtual Library – Expert volunteers put together links for particular topics. International in scope. Limited law related topics, including admiralty, arbitration, digital rights, forensic toxicology are included.
  • About.com – Links to help in solving everyday problems.
Open Directory Project – Directory of the Web created and maintained by volunteer editors also powers the Directory of other search engines. If search term is not in the Directory, the site produces a list of alternative search engines to try.
