Professional Responsibility, also known as Legal Ethics, is a required course that most students take in either their second or third years. Our goal in this course is to focus on the model rules of professional conduct because students need to know these rules to pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam; they must pass this test before they can even take the bar exam. However, another equally important goal is to help students realize that the rules should not be the end of their understanding because commentators often refer to the rules as a baseline below which one’s conduct as a lawyer should not fall. We hope to impress upon students that their own understanding of morality should allow them to aim higher than the baseline in terms of how they conduct themselves as caring professionals.
