Profile: Elizabeth Trask, ’12, Election Coordinator, Town Clerk’s Office, Town of Saugus MA

MSLAW alumna Elizabeth Trask, and she is well on her way to reaching that goal. So far, she has finished 32 marathons and blogs about her experiences at 50forbilly.blogspot.com.

“I lost my father suddenly in 2006, and I ran my first marathon at the Mount Desert Island Marathon in Maine in 2008. Shortly thereafter, I decided that I wanted to run one full marathon in each state in memory of my dad and to benefit the Center for Grieving Children in Portland, Maine,” Trask explained. “I ran several marathons across the country while a student at MSLAW. I was very grateful for the support of MSLAW professors and staff.

After law school, Trask began working as a town election coordinator. “As Election Coordinator for the Town of Saugus, I am constantly analyzing and applying Massachusetts election laws and municipal laws,” Trask said, noting that her law school education at MSLAW helped prepare her for the tasks of interpreting and analyzing the law and making quick judgments. “I am always excited to see citizens eager to vote. Several elderly voters take voting very seriously and never miss an election. I enjoy working with the permanently disabled voters to ensure that they receive absentee ballots. It is also very exciting when young voters want to become involved in the democratic process.” Trask recently assisted the town with a unique special election, for which she consulted with the Secretary of State Elections Division on several legal issues pertaining to the election. “It has been a great learning experience,” Trask said. She noted that during election times, she often works long hours and on election days, she usually works from 5 AM to 11 PM. “The Saugus Town Clerk’s Office is a very busy place. My job position entails multi-tasking and time management.” Trask said she enjoys helping citizens with issues and finding a resolution.

“I enjoyed MSL’s practical approach to teaching the law. In particular, it was extremely valuable to take classes with practicing attorneys and judges,” Trask said, adding “[w]e would all wait with anticipation to see Judge Cornetta’s tie of the day. Several professors at MSLAW practiced an open door office policy, and were readily available for questions, which was very helpful.”

Volunteer work has always been an important part of Trask’s life. After graduating from MSLAW in 2012, Trask volunteered at Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut; Merrimack Valley Legal Services in Lowell, MA; and the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. During law school, she interned at the Lawrence District Court Criminal Clerk’s Office in Lawrence, MA, and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office in Lynn, MA. After law school, she has continued to volunteer at the Children’s Law Center in Lynn, MA. “During law school, it is important to get involved in the community with internships and volunteering,” Trask noted. “The connections that you make during these experiences will help you throughout law school and beyond.”
